CGT Sector Opposes Labor Reform and Meets with Governor Kicillof

A sector of the CGT loyal to Luis Barrionuevo has opposed the government's labor reform. A meeting in Mar del Plata, attended by Governor Axel Kicillof's representatives, also served as a message for the internal struggle in Peronism. The unions stated that the reform is harmful to workers and worsens the economic crisis.

Buenos Aires, Jan 23 (NA) – The sector of the CGT that responds to union leader Luis Barrionuevo stood this Friday against the labor reform project promoted by the Government and held a meeting in the city of Mar del Plata, which included representatives from Governor Axel Kicillof's team. This was also a message to the internal struggle within Peronism.

“We do not want the project sent by the Government to pass because it is detrimental to workers. On the contrary, it reduces the internal market and deepens the crisis,” Bianco expressed when taking the floor.

The event also received the backing of the Catholic Church: Ayelén Tomasini, president of the National Justice and Peace Commission of the Argentine Episcopal Conference, stated in her speech that “work is the space that humanizes us and brings us closer to transcendence.”

“The importance of unions is central; they are spaces that must be guarded because that is where community and care for others are built,” she defined.

On the other hand, former Central Bank President Martín Redrado communicated from Washington via videoconference, delivering a lecture on the economic situation.

The Peronist Plot

The CGT and Kicillof have maintained a relationship for a long time, to the point that the labor union center leans towards the governor's figure in the internal struggle with Kirchnerism for control of the Justicialist Party (PJ).

At the end of December, the CGT's leadership had received the governor at its headquarters on Azopardo Street to analyze the scope of the labor reform project, which they defined as “regressive, flexibilizing, and precarious.”

On that occasion, they highlighted the “importance of Kicillof's role in the federal scenario, as governor of the country's largest and most populous province, to strengthen joint work with other governors.”

“First, the Government has to stop borrowing so much money and get its act together to reactivate the country's economy,” Barrionuevo said while leading a lunch of the National Peronist Trade Union Movement (MNSP) at the 'Presidente Perón' Hotel, of the UTHGRA, the Gastronomic union.

For the union leader, the Government's initiative expresses a “total lack of ability to generate quality employment,” as he stated in an interview with the local newspaper La Capital.

At the same time, Kicillof's representatives were seen with Barrionuevo at the event, which consisted of a lunch with 450 guests and a list of speakers.

Carlos Bianco, provincial Minister of Government and one of Kicillof's most trusted leaders, approached the Presidente Perón Hotel and posed for a photo with Barrionuevo and former CGT triumvir Carlos Acuña.

“First they break everything, and then they say the solution is to take away workers' rights. That does not create jobs or income.”
